Perhaps the most famous legend about Aphrodite concerns the Trojan War. Eris, the goddess of discord, the only goddess not invited to the wedding of King Peleus and the Nereid Thetis, resentfully tossed into the banquet hall a golden apple, marked "for the most beautiful." When Zeus refused to judge between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, the three goddesses who claimed the apple, they asked Paris, prince of Troy, to give his ruling. All tried to bribe: Hera offered him a powerful ruler; Athena who achieve great military fame, and Aphrodite, which is credited to the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite as the fairest and chose as his prize to Helen of Troy, the wife of the Greek king Menelaus. The abduction of Helen by Paris led to the Trojan War.
